My Life as a PhD Student

On June 1st 2021 I’ve started out as a PhD Student at the Institute of Autonomous Intelligent Systems at the University of Bonn, and I’ve decided that I’d like to write down my impressions during the begun journey. Well, technically I’m not considered even a PhD student until I’ve submitted an official exposĂ©, presented my topic and convinced my professor to supervise me, but I’m going to talk about this in a later post.

However, rather than the science-y stuff I’ll be dealing with during my PhD (which I might explain at given time in another place), the topics of this blog are going to be all those things that happen in between, outside or in parallel to the science I conduct: Feelings, Personal problems, Meta-thoughts and all those things people that plague (or bless) PhD students without the public realizing it.

The idea for this Blog has come to me when reading CafĂ© Cum Laude (in german), a similar Blog telling tales of the mundane struggles of PhD students and giving some very neat survival tips. On the other hand, the posts of this blog are probably going to be mostly about things and topics I personally encounter, including my very subjective POV on known issues, problems or struggles. I might include some lessons learnt or tricks as well, but I might also just write down my thoughts as if this were my diary. As a starter, I’ll probably also provide some thoughts on the “why“, the “where“, the “when” and the “what” of my PhD.

Nevertheless, I hope there’s something interesting here for you!
